Of all the wonders of the Texas Hill Country, one of the most breathtaking sights is the beautiful fields of springtime wildflowers. Every year, in the Hill Country or just a very short distance away, this spectacular part of the Texas landscape explodes in a vast kaleidoscope of color sure to delight the eye. Here is a guide to some of the best places to see the beauty all around the acres of ranch property in Texas.
- The Highland Lakes area of the Texas Hill Country bursts into bloom in the months of April, May and June. Though bluebonnets are the most popular wildflowers in this part of Texas, drawing many visitors each year, there are many other types of wildflowers as well. These include the Texas Paintbrush, Indian Blanket, Primrose, Greenthread, Winecup, and many more!
- Wildseed Farms has over two hundred acres of wildflowers to enjoy. Located seven miles east of Fredericksburg, Wildseed features many different types of wildflowers, blooming from March until November. Admission is free, and the property includes butterfly gardens, a biergarten, and wildflower seeds that are available for purchase.
- Johnson City celebrates Wildflower Days with a festival for the entire month of April. Wildflowers bloom along every roadway, and activities include the Men’s Texas State Chili Cook-off, art exhibitions and many other activities for every member of the family.
- Burnet has been designated the “Bluebonnet Capital of Texas” by the state legislature! April is the best time to view the flowers, and the Burnet area includes routes near Lake Buchanan and Inks Lake.
- The Texas Department of Transportation sets up a wildflower hotline every year. By calling 800-452-9292, you can find up-to-date information on the best places to view bluebonnets, Indian Paint blossoms, and many other beautiful wildflowers.
- Between Kerrville and Bandera, you will see many breathtaking wildflower sites. Take Turtle Creek Road and Highway 173 for some of the best viewing. Johnson State Park is also an excellent place to see wildflowers.
- Willow City Wildflower Loop
Another beautiful trail is the Willow City Loop that runs from the foothills of Fredericksburg through (you guessed it!) Willow City. This is a particularly good spot for bluebonnet viewing, and a vigorous trail for cyclists, who make frequent use of the long, steep ascent known as the Willow City Ledge. In addition to the wildflowers lining the sides of the road, be on the lookout for some magnificent streams and hills; even if you can’t make it during the few weeks of bluebonnet season, this is one trail that provides a beautiful escape all year long.
